HEALTH CARE REFORM & MEDICARE
Dr. Glenn Pearson, past President of Physicians for a National Health Program, will share his perspective on national health reform and Medicare. Will it improve or protect Medicare?

Northern Colorado Chapter Report - November 1, 2009

Interest, awareness and activism are growing in Northern Colorado. Throughout the summer and fall many HCAC members have been writing letters to the editor and phoning, emailing and talking with our members in Congress about reform.

Chapter members staffed weekend booths at the New West (August) and Sustainable Living (September) fairs, where people signed petitions and filled out postcards to members of Congress and good conversation about health care reform took center stage.

On September 13 nearly 500 people turned out for a rally hosted by the Chapter for the Mad as Hell Doctors. Speeches from the Docs, music by local songwriters, and a large stage presence of more than 25 local health care providers raised spirits for the push for reform. The Docs stopover was a centerpiece for the six-part program series sponsored by the public library district.

The October chapter meeting saw nearly 60 people squeezed into the room to view Money-Driven Medicine, based on a book of the same name by Maggie Mahar. Local docs fielded questions and shared their perspectives following the film. Education and advocacy continues with the Chapter’s speakers on the stump every week to service clubs, churches, health care providers, and colleges.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION: Write letters to the editor; call in to talk shows; talk to your friends, neighbors, and relations about single payer and how HR 676 is different from the public option in the multipayer HR 3200 (go to www.pnhp.org for more info). Suggest that your congregation or your organization have a program on health care reform (info on speakers, dvd’s, etc.: Linda Mahan lmahan@alum.bu.edu or 484-2259). Send a donation to HCAC at www.healthcareforcolorado.org .

NOTE FOR EVENT ACTIVISTS: There will be town hall meetings, demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, and other events that will come up during Aug. & Sept, about which HCAC will need to alert our members who are interested in participating in these events. We have an "activist alert list" separate from our larger membership list, to which we send such extra alerts. If you are not on this activist list and would like to get the alerts, please contact Eliza Carney, abcdrn@greyrock.org or call 416-0636. If you are on the list and would like to be removed from it, also contact Eliza. We want everyone to find and feel comfortable in their "niche."

This is an exciting and important time in our country’s history. We hope every member of HCAC will take the opportunity to be part of this history. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please let us know. Thank you!!

And one final note:
Calling all businesses: A coalition of small business owners in Colorado has formed to advocate for single payer.  Please send your contact information to Nathan Wilkes at business@healthcareforallcolorado.org or for further information contact him at 720-475-4160 or 303-883-7269 (cell).

Looking forward to seeing everyone!!
