REPORT OF THE Southeast CO Chapter
Sept. 25, 2009
On Aug. 24th we held a public
forum “The Politics of Health Care Reform. There
were six panelists, Rep.
Sal Pace, Dr. Lou Balizet,
Sheldon Bloedorn (Chair So.CO Tea Party), and representatives from the
local offices of Rep. John Salazar, Sen. Michael Bennet,
and Sen. Mark Udall. About 150 people attended, many of them Tea Party
members. I had arranged for
Sheriff Dept. coverage, because members
of our group had attended Sen. Bennet’s
Meet and Greet a week earlier and there were angry
protestors there. Our event was more orderly but
even with the sheriffs there it was a rather boisterous crowd.
I attended a much more sedate “by invitation”event for Sen. Bennet on Sept. 5th and was impressed
with him as a person. He seemed pretty positive
about the Public Option, but didn’t think it could be the only
plan which was subsidized. He was noncommittal on single payer.
Aug. 27th I was in LaJunta for a meeting with local folks
interested in single payers and health care reform. It
was at a home, mostly local Dem’s,
and a very interested group. They are all involved
in many community activities and I found no interest in forming an HCAC
group, but there was a volunteer to be our contact person there.
I will follow up with that. The following day I attended
another Rural Colorado Coalition Conference and heard T.R. Reid again.
I made a few contacts.
Sept. 9th I had a debate on single
payer with Linda McMillan, a local lawyer, at the monthly Mental Health
America – Pueblo Luncheon meeting. It was a
fun meeting with about 20 people, at least three of whom came just
because of the subject. One was a well to do (early
Qual Med investor) physician on
whom I have been working for years. He comes to
about every event we have, and just listens and asks questions and
still doesn’t seem sure where he stands. Another was an active area
Family Doc. who supports single payer but has some
special ideas about how it should be done. The
third was a local college student I have been in e-mail contact with
(via Dave I think). Lots of audience participation.
Linda’s objections were not well accepted as
reality bound by the group.
On Sept. 11th, Dr. Pam Parks and I
were on a panel for an Action 22 meeting on Health Care Reform.
Also on the panel were David Golenda,
a local insurance agent, and Sheldon Bloedorn.
Again there were about 20 folks there, One couple were Tea Party folks and the rest were
Action 22 people. It went well and there were
several folks who came up afterwards for more discussion and
explanation. The same retired doc was there again.
