Let's strike back at medical debt!
Come join us from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, panel on medical and student debt, being hosted by Social Forum Collective and It's Our Economy - Colorado Chapter, at the Mercury Cafe in Denver.
My life was altered drastically by medical debt even though I always made it a priority to carry health insurance. I spent years fighting providers -- doctors' practices, clinics, hospitals, labs, etc.-- when I didn't have enough to pay my insurance premiums, my deductibles, my out-of-pocket medical costs, and my other living expenses until one day one provider sued me for the 10 percent of his balance that was not paid by my insurance. I was forced into bankruptcy rather than have my wages garnished and end up unable to meet all my other medical costs. I had to choose bankruptcy over my husband's life. What a choice to make. That was the story you heard about and saw if you saw me and my husband, Larry, in Michael Moore's 2007 documentary on the broken health care system, SICKO. Since then, I've been in 43 states and D.C. educating and advocating for an end to medical debt through reformation of the broken, for-profit health care system.
Come learn more about what the Strike Debt folks are doing to hit at the heart of the medical debt industry and relieve some suffering in the process. until we can end this once and for all through a single-payer, Medicare for all for life system, let's do what we can do together.
Peace,
Donna Smith
